Who Are We

With the opportunity of the centenary of the First World War in 2014, a new society has been created at the University of Oxford, aiming at giving space for discussion, cultural exchanges, and cooperation to the peoples from, and those interested in what used to be the lands of the Habsburg Crown.

Our Society's vision is to successfully promote cultural ties with Central Europe under a single roof. We judge this to be a more effective way to organise larger and more interesting events, than through the smaller individual Societies that currently exist in the University.

We are planning to have at least one event per week each term, ranging from casual meetings to white-tie receptions. Through these events we are hoping to promote the history of Austria-Hungary and the culture(s) of its peoples back then, and nowadays. Our Society's Lower Administrative Body is composed of national Commissioners to exactly ensure equal cultural representation in our events. We have fourteen official languages (look at FAQ), a fact that officially makes us the most polyglot society of the University of Oxford, or any University in the UK for that matter! However, for reasons of comfort and inclusiveness we have set English to be the working and events language of the Society. Our Society is open to all.

Our Chancellery and General Assembly wishes to warmly welcome you all to the Oxford University Austro-Hungarian Society.
