This year, using the opportunity of the centenary of the First World War, we have decided to launch a society that aims to focus on the similarities and not the differences of the peoples and cultures of the Habsburg state. The culture of that state and its successors is one of the core elements of Western culture. It has produced enough music to pave the entire world in partitures, world class philosophers like Wittgenstein, physicists like Schrödinger and Eötvös, figures like Freud, Zweig, Metternich, Hayek, Ressel and others.
The secret of the cultural success of Central Europe lies in its multiculturalism. For most of its history the Habsburg Monarchy had displayed an unparalleled in other European countries decree of national freedom towards its nationalities, for the simple fact that no nationality was large enough to be dominant. Jews, Czechs, Austrian Germans, Slovaks, Hungarians, Serbs, Poles, Croats, Slovaks and Italians, all lived under a single state with a unique chance for cultural exchanges and progress.
Our aim is to display, with our society that the cooperation between the peoples of Central Europe is still alive, and that our cultures – no matter how diverse in language and religion – are still a all branches of the same tree.
I would like to seize this chance to thank you on behalf of everyone in the society for your interest in us. We are looking forward to seeing you around in our events.
